Assembled by producers and kneecapped by the departure of their most distinctive singer, Dawn Robinson, En Vogue remains the definitive diva-soul harmony group of the '90s, less on the strength of their meringuey harmonies than on their extraordinary material. This collection, cannily sequenced to hide later, lesser tracks between the hits, skims the cream from their three albums and EP, throws in 1998's "No Fool No More" single, and generally opts for album versions rather than EV's spiffy single remixes. It reveals an act that went from pleasant Soul II Soul-ish fluff to real soul power when it dedicated itself to updating R&B and funk traditions: quoting Funkadelic (and later paraphrasing their "Knee Deep" as "Let It Flow"), harmonizing over a stuttering James Brown riff, and getting their slow jams by way of '60s deep-soul ballads. --Douglas Wolk
This is an exceptional collection that most people would find enjoyable. I bought this album (along with the 6 other volumes) years ago, but I still play it a few times a year. The well-known hit songs during this time period are here: "The Hustle", "Disco Inferno", and "Love Hangover".
The Disco Years, Vol. 1: Turn the Beat Around Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the '70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn't be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scored multiple singles hits yet pulled off albums with the best of her contemporaries. This is an early collection, so it misses "Nobody Does It Better" and other later hits. Regardless, nearly all the songs here are worth having. Flavorful and nourishing--and a good package, besides. --Gavin McNett
